Caring for the soul

- Oct 28, 2019-

Every year on October 15th is the International Day of the Blind. According to statistics, China is the country with the most blind people in the world, with about 5 million blind people, accounting for 18% of the world's blind.

As China's population continues to grow and aging is increasing, about 450,000 people are blind every year in China, which means that a new blind person appears every minute every day.

The eyes are the windows of the mind. Whether it is adolescents or the elderly, visual disabilities such as cataracts, glaucoma, keratitis, iritis and various fundus (retina) diseases are seriously plaguing people's lives. Therefore, caring for the eyes must always be taken seriously.

Cataract - the number one cause of blindness

In the ophthalmology clinic of the affiliated hospital of Shaoxing University of Arts and Sciences, the reporter saw an old man named Yu Yungen. Yu Dabo, 68, has often felt pain in his eyes since June last year, just like eyelashes falling into his eyes, but this did not attract his attention. Gradually, he found himself looking more and more difficult, as if there was always a dust in front of him. It was not until the medical examination was held on September 3 this year that he was told that he had senile cataract. At this time, his right eye vision was only the level of “digital front of the eye”, which is medically known as the maturity stage of cataract.

Dr. Zhao Ruizhu, who gave Yu Dabo a diagnosis, told reporters that cataract is the number one cause of blindness, mostly caused by opacity of the lens. This type of vision disease cannot be treated by drugs and generally needs to be removed by surgery. In China, only about half of the approximately 400,000 cataract patients receive surgery each year. Dr. Zhao said that in general, cataracts need surgery after they reach maturity. If the knife is not opened, the cataract will slowly enter the over-mature period, causing the lens of the eye to be alienated and causing complications such as glaucoma and iritis, eventually leading to blindness of the eyes.

According to Dr. Zhao, there are many types of cataract patients, including senile cataracts caused by natural physiological aging, congenital cataracts, cataracts caused by trauma, and complicated cataracts. People of all ages may suffer from this high Blind eye disease. Congenital cataracts, such as those caused by genetic or dysplasia, are usually manifested in adolescents and even in childhood. The concurrent cataract is mostly caused by diabetes. This is due to the problem of glucose metabolism in diabetic patients, which affects the metabolism of the lens. In addition, the blood vessels in the fundus due to hypertension also increase the incidence of cataract.

Getting younger and younger, myopia is getting deeper and deeper

Ten years ago, a student wearing glasses in a class still accounted for a small part, but now, no matter which school you go into which school, you can see rows of "small four eyes", even the whole class are nearsighted. The phenomenon. Faced with the phenomenon of “getting younger and getting more and more high”, Dr. Zhao reminded that myopia can also lead to visual disability and even blindness. For example, people with high myopia will have retinal detachment, so eye protection must start small.
